Thinning hair: restored thickness with FUE micrografts

Today, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the most high-tech hair graft technique for both men and women. These micrografts are autologous because they are harvested from the patient themselves. They create very natural-looking hair coverage in bald areas, recreate an attractive hairline on the forehead, and can also prevent alopecia by making thinning areas of hair look thicker in one single session, carried out under local anaesthetic with no incisions, no stitches, no pre-holes, no scars and no damage to the surrounding tissue, either on the donor site or the implantation site.

What does it involve?

While the patient lies back comfortably, the doctor marks out the donor sites, which are located at the back and sides of the scalp. Hair follicles (tiny sacks that contain one or several hairs) are harvested from the site, one by one, using a punch, a kind of miniaturised tool. Since the follicles are no bigger than a pinhead, no marks are left behind. Then, the graft is injected into the balding area of scalp using a special pen, with no need for any incisions. The patient can resume their usual activities the very next day.

Results

Inserted between the existing hairs, the follicles are undetectable and, since there is no minimum time frame to adhere to between grafts, the implantation density is maximised. Three months after the graft, the first cycle of new hairs begins to appear. Very fine to start with, they gradually become thicker and denser. The final result is visible after eight to twelve months, with a completely natural-looking hairline and hair movement.

Frequency

After the first session, more hair implants can be scheduled every year or two years in order to enhance the results.

Side effects

Thanks to technological advances and ever more sophisticated tools, the disadvantages of hair grafts – bleeding, scabs, itching, swelling in the forehead and around the eyes – have almost disappeared. You might feel a pulling sensation after the procedure, but this can quickly be soothed with a pain killer. Another possible side effect is hair loss after the graft. But don’t worry: it is just the small hairs from inside the transplanted follicles. These follicles will then embark on a complete growth cycle, in which new hairs will be produced.

Our opinion

In men, FUE micrografts are often the only way of recovering the hairs’ density. Since hair loss in men is primarily down to genetics, there are no oral or topical treatments that can correct genetic alopecia. However, in women, the causes of hair loss are much more varied and alopecia is much less ravaging. A blood test and hormone assessment might bring to light a, iron deficiency or thyroid problem, which simply need correcting in order to stop the hair loss. Then, a hair transplant could be used to help beautify and boost the hair’s volume.
